CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Jim Leavens, the retired major who served 30 years as part of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and is running for Lee County Sheriff, received an endorsement Thursday from Dan Severson, the retired Navy commander and Top Gun fighter pilot, who is running for Florida’s 19th Congressional district.
The position of sheriff is the highest elected local official and according to Severson, it should be someone of unquestionable integrity who supports the Second Amendment and is committed to protecting and serving the community.
“We need an elected sheriff, not someone who is appointed and then running with the benefit of being in office,” said Severson. “Jim Leavens has the training and experience that is needed to do the job correctly, and he is a proven leader who has been formative in influencing the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.”
Leavens has more than 30 years of training, leadership, and practical experience of doing every aspect of this important job. Additionally, he is recognized by his fellow officers as a leader and a man of integrity and character.
“I proudly endorse Jim and will do what I can to support him,” Severson said. “It’s also important to note that Jim is the only pro-life candidate running in the race.”
Severson, is one of nine candidates running for Congress in District 19. He is a former Navy commander and Top Gun fighter pilot.
Severson is the most ardent pro-gun supporter of the 2nd amendment running in the race, and is also a major proponent of legislation supporting servicemembers and veterans.
Severson has been endorsed by the conservative Republican former Minnesota governor, Tim Pawlenty, Michael Johns, the co-founder and leader of the National Tea Party Movement, and Clint Lorance, the Army officer who was recently pardoned by President Donald J. Trump. Florida’s 19th Congressional district covers Cape Coral, Ft. Myers, Estero, Marco Island and Naples.
